to our attention

ATO

What's hot at the ATO

  • Email Virus Warning
The Tax Office is warning of an increase in forged emails which claim to be from the
Tax Office. You need to be aware that these forged emails may contain a virus and
that they may be difficult to distinguish from legitimate Tax Office emails.

  • What to look out for
Treat with caution any unsolicited email that appears to come from the Tax Office -
especially if you have had no recent contact with the Tax Office or if there is no apparent
reason for the email. You should also be particularly cautious of any email that contains
a suspiciously named attachment or subject matter.
  • Where do forged emails come from?
Some email viruses infect the email system of a computer by locating as many email addresses as possible from accessible files on the hard disk drive. The virus then manipulates the list to create multiple fake emails spreading the virus further.
These emails are then sent over the internet in an attempt to infect the
    recipient's computer.

Preventative measures

Ensure your computer has the most up to date anti-virus software with an email virus checking
facility enabled.

As with any other organisation, the Tax Office is unable to prevent the forging of email addresses.
The Tax Office employs best practice security techniques and has a rigorous anti-virus regime
in place to prevent the distribution of viruses from its systems.

Human Resources

Wrongful dismissal

This is an area we are continually amazed at. What counts as okay, what is not, and the
circumstances surrounding the situation seem to vary on a daily basis.

One thing that appears to help is ensuring you have all your staff on current employment terms
and that the terms are clear and non-discriminatory.

We are aware that the state government is currently trying to establish guidelines for an
"appropriate dismissal", and our principle Eve Costello has been participating in the debate
through her activities with the CPA Small Business Centre of Excellence.
